Benefits of Recycling Water for Industrial Laundries

Clarifiers and filter presses are two commonly used mechanisms for treating industrial laundry wastewater and can help you save money. Often, when recycled water is reused, it is preheated. Energy costs could be reduced as much as 50% because the industrial washer does not have to work as hard to heat up the recycled water. Water and sewage bills will also see a reduction with our system, which recycles about 85% of the washing machine’s total water intake. Our clients see approximately 80% reduction in water and sewage costs.

How Water is Recycled and Purified

The recycling process is comprised of several operations. Before filtration, the wastewater needs to be treated. The wastewater first goes to a pit or sump. This section can be equipped, optionally, with a regenerative blower that reduces the oxygen demand and increases the ability of the system to separate solids from liquids. Next, “pinflocs,” which are small particles, are formed in the equalization (EQ) tank. A flocculent is added to gather the pinflocs into larger particles and the water is ready for separation.

The Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) unit is where separation takes place. The pre-treated wastewater is injected with aerated pressurized water, which causes very fine bubbles to come out of the solution and attach to the floc, lifting it to the surface. This layer is directed to the sludge tank and the clean water coming out of the DAF unit typically can be sent directly to the sewer. If required, pH adjustment and/or activated carbon treatment, to remove VOC’s, can be added at this stage of the filtration process.

Lastly, a filter press dewaters the sludge, which can then be disposed of in a landfill. The liquid is recycled back to the EQ tank or to an optional oil/water separator. This entire system, up to the filter press, is fully automated. A filter press requires the attention of an operator on an as-needed basis.
