Wastewater Contaminants in the Food Industry
While most industries must find solutions for the problem of wastewater production, the food industry is consistently one of the top sources for industrial wastewater. Not only is a large volume of wastewater generated by the production and processing of food, but this water typically contains a high contaminant load that could potentially damage receiving waters, such as nearby rivers, lakes and streams. Additionally, there are many contaminant variables within the food industry, from dairy production to oil and fat processing, which pose unique challenges for wastewater treatment.
To ensure all pollutants of concern (POC) are removed from food industry wastewater before its discharge, M.W. Watermark™ is prepared to help with our line of wastewater treatment equipment and technology.
Contaminants in Food Wastewater
One of the major problems with food wastewater is that it often has a high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and high chemical oxygen demand (COD). BOD and COD are measurements of how much decomposable organic material wastewater contains. While some food waste is decomposable, such as carbohydrates produced from fruit and vegetable processing, much of it is not. This means the wastewater typically requires treatment before it can be discharged.
That’s because if the BOD or COD is too high, as predetermined by the EPA and local municipalities, the receiving body of water may experience a negative impact. In addition, food wastewater contains a number of nutrients, organic matter, nitrogenous compounds, inorganics and solid residues that require the wastewater to be treated.
Agricultural Wastewater Contaminants
Agriculture is another major contributor to the food industry’s wastewater. It usually comes from one of two sources: irrigation runoff and fruit and vegetable processing. Depending on the source, the wastewater may contain high amounts of sediment, pesticides, nitrogen and phosphorous pollutants, animal waste and more. In order to protect the ecosystem of nearby bodies of water, this wastewater also needs to be effectively treated and, in many cases, recycled.
