The Properties of Polymer Blending

Polymer blending systems may sound simple and straightforward on the surface. However, this process can be more complicated than it seems. These synthetic properties do not always combine without issues. In fact, often combining these materials causes significant changes that disrupt the chemical makeup of both. To understand how this works, we need only to understand a little bit about thermodynamics.

Thermodynamics is a branch of physics concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work. It defines macroscopic variables—such as internal energy, entropy, and pressure—that partly describe a body of matter or radiation.

The First Law of Thermodynamics

This rule states that a change moves things from a status of more energy to a status of less energy. When executing polymer blending systems and observing this rule, it is necessary to force the chemicals to have less energy after mixing them than they would each contain separately.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics

This rule dictates how things change. After combining two polymers, the change can bring about a state of disorder in both chemicals known as entropy. In simple terms, it is easier to move from a state of order to a state or disorder than it is to instill more order. It is easier to incorporate less entropy than to incorporate more entropy. Mixing polymers causes their already disordered states to become more chaotic.
