Produced Water in Detail

In the oil and gas production industry, there are countless variables to account for during the excavation and extraction phases of hydraulic fracturing.

One such variable is the quality of “produced water,” a common byproduct of these operations. Produced water is a mixture of the chemical agents used in hydraulic fracturing and the dirt, debris, and particulate matter from the rock formations themselves. Many of these contaminants need to be removed in order to reuse or dispose of the water.

Aside from the chemicals themselves, the hydraulic fracturing process requires a great deal of water. The hydraulic pressure opens fissures to reach oil and gas deposits. To keep fissures and fractures open, proppants such as sand or ceramics are commonly used. Even under high pressure, the proppants should allow gas to pass through. Flowback water is a combination of the fluids and additives pumped into the ground, plus the brine water and other contaminants from the targeted rock formations.

Disposal of contaminated flowback water is an expensive and legally complicated process. Many operations elect to filter the flowback water until the vast majority of contaminants are removed. After a series of filters removing particulates of different sizes, it becomes necessary to remove oil and other contaminants. The produced water may pass through a weir-structured Level Master, a de-oiling hydrocyclone, and several smaller media filters. The slurry separated by filters can then be processed with a filter press.
