Fastest Growing Filtration Industries and Applications
Three Booming Industries Where Filtration Technology is Playing a Major Role
Industrial filtration technology plays a fundamental role in a diverse range of industries by helping remove solids or other impurities from water and other fluids. But as times change, so too do the industries in which innovative filtration equipment from M.W. Watermark™ can be put to use. Here, we’ll explore a range of up-and-coming industries where we expect our filter presses and other types of water and wastewater treatment equipment to find a home.
CBD Oil Extraction from Hemp
With a growing number of states legalizing cannabis, it’s no wonder why the nation’s many cannabis-based companies are thriving. With increased legality, these businesses have also developed more ways to deliver the effects for which cannabis is known. One method that’s growing rapidly in popularity is through CBD oil extraction. CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, a chemical compound derived from the hemp plant. CBD oil is used to treat a variety of medical conditions, and is now legal is most U.S. states.
But how exactly is this oil extracted? The answer, of course, lies in filtration technology. Extraction methods vary, but filter presses are key in creating a reliable final product, which marks this industry as the perfect match for M. W. Watermark’s filtration technologies.
Two of the most popular CBD oil extraction methods using a filter press are known as Hemp Bio Mass and Winterization.
Hemp Bio Mass
Hemp bio mass utilizes a maceration process where ground-up hemp is mixed with a solvent such as ethanol. The solvent strips the CBD oil out of the plant fibers, and then the hemp oil/solvent combination is run through a filter press as a slurry. The solvent is then distilled off, resulting in pure hemp oil. The oil can then be further distilled and purified, if desired.
Many plant waxes and fatty acids are soluble in carbon dioxide. The winterization method of extraction takes advantage of the differing solubility of waxes and cannabinoids at low temperatures. (i.e. minus 30 degrees Celsius or lower). Essentially, the frozen wax from the hemp plant containing cannabidiol oil is stripped from the plant using carbon dioxide. The wax is then separated from the solvent using a filter press.
Benefits of Using a Filter Press
Many businesses involved in CBD oil extraction from hemp are realizing multiple benefits from utilizing a filter press. For example, when a smaller operation moves from using basic filtration media such as brewery bags to the filter cloths found in a filter press, they are finding new levels of production efficiency and speed. Filter cloths are re-usable, versus brewery bags, which are designed for a one-time use. Also, brewery bags are hung up and the hemp is drained via the gravity method, which takes quite a bit more time than pressure filtration using a filter press. Ultimately, employing a filter press results in a more controlled production environment, contributing to a higher-quality product.
Another benefit is that M.W. Watermark offers FDA-compliant filter cloths and filter plates, as well as manifold piping and hydraulic oil and systems designed to combat contamination. Our selection of easy-to-clean equipment includes a stainless steel manifold with tri-clamp fittings, which is designed to be quickly disassembled for effortless sanitization.

Evolving governmental regulations and increased consumer demand for green solutions have combined to create a prosperous and ever-growing biofuel industry in the USA. These fuels help minimize environmental impact by burning cleaner than petroleum-based alternatives. Filtration is a key part of the biodiesel production process, and the ability to filter wastewater during this process helps biodiesel producers maintain their dedication to environmentally friendly operations.
The transportation industry is a large and changing industry, and where there are vehicles, there’s the need for those vehicles to be washed. Whether you are caring for a personal SUV or performing commercial airplane maintenance, regular washing is likely a part of your routine. Filtration technology nearly always plays a major role in keeping the water used by your washing equipment clean enough to serve its purpose. This also coincides with the increasing demand for environmentally-friendly technologies mentioned earlier, as filtration equipment is often designed to help minimize wasteful use of water.
