Benefits of Wastewater Recycling in Concrete

The Clean Water Act, a federal regulation, establishes the criteria for national pH levels, and regularly updates the acceptable pH ranges to reflect current scientific information about water acidification. These regulations could potentially lead to fines for concrete manufacturers because the production of concrete and the cleaning of equipment increases the pH levels in water. A filter press can efficiently recycle wastewater that is produced during concrete manufacturing and help producers avoid costly fines while reusing water.

A filter press system separates cement particles from washout water and the recycled water can be reused to blend new concrete. The filtrate is free of solids and excess reusable water, now clean of solids, can be easily disposed.

Success Story: Osborne Concrete Company

We worked with Osborne Concrete Company, a Michigan-based ready-mixed concrete company that now uses a filter press to recycle the water used to clean out their trucks. In 2010, the company transitioned to become nearly 100 percent recyclable, but at the time, only 25 percent of the wastewater could be reused. Their disposal process was expensive and complicated, so Osborne Concrete Company contacted M.W. Watermark to develop a solution that would incorporate a filter press into their current wastewater recycling process to reach close to 100 percent efficiency. The new filter press allowed them to re-use the water to make more concrete or to wash trucks. Now that Osborne Concrete Company’s system is nearly 100 percent recyclable, the company is taking even more steps toward sustainable production by partnering with commercial companies that require vendors to have LEED credits. M.W. Watermark is proud to have played a role in Osborne Concrete Company’s dedication to sustainability.
