How to Determine the Size of Filter Press Needed for Your Application
A filter press is a piece of batch operation, fixed volume equipment ranging from .01-600 cubic feet that separates liquids and solids using pressure filtration. A slurry is pumped into the filter press and dewatered under pressure. (A slurry is a semi-liquid mixture, typically composed of fine particles suspended in water).
A filter press can be used for process, water and wastewater treatment in a variety of industries and applications. In most applications, filter presses are used for dewatering solids prior to disposal. However, in some cases the separated solid or liquid is the actual product.
Because filter presses are used across so many applications, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to determining filter press sizing requirements.
Fortunately, over the history of commercial businesses and municipalities utilizing filter presses for a multitude of applications, two basic and reliable mathematical formulas have been developed to cover most situations.
The first formula covers most “standard” slurries. The second formula covers slurries composed of metal hydroxides, which are often found in wastewater from metal plating and finishing operations.

M.W. Watermark’s goal is to help our customers make the most informed equipment and equipment sizing decisions possible.
Our team’s many years of experience across a wide variety of filter press applications provides a knowledge base that serves our customers well.
Feel free to contact M.W. Watermark at any time to discuss your particular solid-liquid project.
Please work to obtain in advance as much of the information as possible outlined below. If one or more criteria are not available, M.W. Watermark can test a sample of the slurry, and/or use some standard data. (See Laboratory Testing section below for more information).
Information Needed to Size and Quote a Filter Press
• Type of slurry to be processed
• Amount of slurry to be processed in a given amount of time expressed in either:
—Gallons per minute, per hour, per day or per week
—Pounds of solids (100% dry basis) per time period
• Number of hours per day, and days per week the process operates
• Percent solids (by weight) in slurry
• Specific gravity of slurry (if available)
• Process operating temperature
• Density of wet filter cake
• Chemical conditioning amounts, if required (D.E., etc.)
• Press location: Indoor or outdoor, temperature range
• Desired cake thickness (std. is 32mm – 1 1/4”)
• Desired closure & control automation (Specify: Manual, Semi-Automatic or Automatic)
• Other (Please specify optional features required)
M.W. Watermark maintains an in-house laboratory for determining the most effective equipment, equipment sizing, filtration media and dewatering techniques for your specific application.
After treatment, we can return to you the clean water (filtrate) and filter cake, along with an analytical report of our findings.
Our services range from feasibility testing of your materials to providing portable pilot filter press units for on-site testing.
